HEBRON -- Charles R. "Chuck" Smith IV, 49, of Hebron passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born on June 5, 1959, in Salisbury, he was the son of Charles Russell Smith III and Patricia Smith of Hebron and Gloria and Robert Harrison of Whaleyville. Chuck was a 1977 graduate of Mardela High School, where he played in the school band and was in all of the school plays. He also had a band named Wizard, while in high school. He attended college for two years and then went into the family business, Smith's IGA in Hebron. He decided that wasn't for him and wanted to make music his career. He played with Loose Cannons and Riff Raff. He traveled the country and Canada with Dallas and Deep Creek. He was currently playing with Hotline. For the last eight years, he has worked as a rural route carrier for the United States Postal Service in Hebron. Chuck loved life, loved his family and loved his music. He lived life "his way." In addition to his parents, he is survived by six children, Aeriel Smith, Ashley Smith, Charles Smith V, Shawn Smith, Sara Vickers and Phillip King; one grandson, Shawn Smith Jr., with a new grandson due in December; two brothers, Gregory Smith and his wife, Sherry, of Laurel and John Smith and his wife, Carroll, of Hebron; a sister, Christine Walker and her husband, Boyde, of Tyaskin; two nephews, Austin Smith of Hebron and Gregory Wilkinson of Laurel; and a niece, Jessica Walker of Tyaskin. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles Jr. and Lena Smith; and maternal grandparents, James and Helen Purcell. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church/The Uprising in Hebron. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Holloway Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church Friday. The Rev. William Cropper will officiate. Interment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.
